Stretching five miles along the western edge of the city, this famous route showcases breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean, beautiful landscapes, and the heartbeat of the city's vibrant culture. For first-time visitors or locals aiming to rediscover their city, walking the Great Highway can be an inspiring experience that shouldn't be missed.

What to Wear
Layers, layers, and more layers. San Francisco is known for its unpredictable weather. One minute it's sprinkling, next thing you know the fog rolls away and it is 70F for an hour.
Where to Start Your Journey
Starting your walk on the Great Highway is straightforward. A great kickoff point is the Ocean Beach Park, located at the southern end of the route on Sloat Blvd. If you’re driving, look for parking along the beach. In my YouTube Vlog, I parked in the parking lot at Ocean Beach Park but there are only a few parking spots located there. Alternatively, public transport is convenient, as you can take Muni's L or N lines to get to the area.
Once you arrive at Ocean Beach Park, take a moment to appreciate the vast stretch of sand and the sound of waves crashing on the shore. This rhythmic backdrop sets the tone for your adventure. From here, the Great Highway stretches north, inviting you to stroll along its tranquil paths.
What to Expect on the Great Highway
As you begin your adventure, stunning ocean views will greet you on your left while iconic San Francisco landmarks unfold on your right. The Great Highway features wide, paved trails, making it friendly for walkers, joggers, and cyclists alike. The Great Highway was recently permanently deemed pedestrian-only March 2025.
You'll encounter beachgoers soaking up the foggy sun, surfers riding the waves, and families enjoying beach activities. The area is also rich in wildlife; keep an eye out for sea birds like pelicans and the Western Snowy Plover, a threatened species.
Around halfway through your walk, you’ll reach Sutro Baths. This historic site was once a luxurious public saltwater swimming pool complex. Today, it offers a glimpse into the past, featuring stunning views and hiking trails. A detour here is certainly worthwhile, with the coastal scenery providing perfect photo opportunities.
Iconic Stops Along the Way
Walking along the Great Highway presents several beloved landmarks worth exploring.
Camera Obscura
$3 to enter the Camera Obscura located next to the now-closed Cliff House. The technology of the camera relies on exterior light sources (the sun) to project an image onto a flat surface. I personally did not enter but I hear it is a neat activity for just $3.
Sutro Baths
The Sutro Baths are a must-see stop, inviting visitors to experience their historical significance. The remains of the baths, coupled with the dramatic coastline, provide a picturesque backdrop for photographs. Make your way down to the lower levels for an up-close encounter with the rugged beauty of the area.
Murphy Windmill
Continuing nouth, you'll encounter the Murphy Windmill within Golden Gate Park. This historic landmark is a stunning sight set against the lush greenery surrounding it. It’s an ideal spot to relax, soak in the atmosphere, and capture some memorable pictures against the backdrop of a working windmill.
Golden Gate Park
You won’t want to skip venturing into Golden Gate Park. This expansive urban park spans over 1,000 acres and offers countless options, from walking trails and gardens to world-class museums like the California Academy of Sciences. Feel free to take a break from your walk, explore the grounds, or sample delicious snacks from the park’s food vendors.
Best Places to Eat
After a refreshing walk, it’s time to refuel. Thankfully, there are plenty of great eateries along the way that cater to hungry walkers.
Beach Chalet
Stop at the Beach Chalet, situated right at Ocean Beach. This popular eatery offers ocean views and a menu full of delicious seafood and local dishes. Try their clam chowder or fish and chips for a satisfying treat after your outdoor adventure.

As you walk along the Great Highway, remember to bring your camera!
